Volunteering and social work

On this website, you can see some examples of my work as a journalist. But I would also like to talk about my work on other fronts that are very important to me.

Brasil.IO

Since March 2020, I have been part of the Brasil.IO volunteer team that has been collecting, checking and publishing open data on Covid-19 in all 5,500 cities in Brazil. Our database has been used by researchers such as the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, the largest research institute in epidemiology and public health in Brazil. Our data has also been used in stories from The New York Times, CNN Brazil and Jornal Nacional, the largest Brazilian TV newscast.

Open Knowledge

I am also part of the Open Knowledge Brasil team of Civic Innovation Ambassadors. We are a group of 73 people from different cities in the country who work to encourage the opening of public data and the transparency of governments. In 2020, our main goal is to automate the reading and capture of information from official journals across the country. We are also putting pressure on candidates in the 2020 local elections to commit to advancing the Access to Information and Transparency Law topics in their cities.

CodeTheCurve

In 2020, I also participated in CodeTheCurve, an international hackathon promoted by Unesco, IBM and SAP to develop solutions that would help combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Only 40 teams from around the world were selected (only two of them were from Brazil). My team, BotBR, was entirely formed by people from the Northeast, the region of Brazil with the lowest human development index. We present the prototype of an application capable of helping the poorest people to find information on how to protect themselves and, mainly, how to get to the nearest health facility, if they need it.
